Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Chiriqui, ca. 300 to 800 CE. A charming pottery vessel in the form of an owl presenting a bulbous body, a carinated shoulder, and a slender neck that slightly widens to form the bird’s head, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. The exterior walls of the delightful example are adorned with burnt orange and black pigments on a cream-hued ground in circular and castellated motifs. The rim is pointed in 2 sections to form the feather tufted horns of the owl, while target-motif eyes sit just below flanking an applied, pointed beak. Size: 4.75" Diameter x 6" H (12.1 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
