Description
MOBILE, ALABAMA COIN SILVER MCCAA FAMILY PRESENTATION SMALL COVERED PITCHER, vase form with repousse, chased, and engraved grapevine decoration, featuring a hinged lid with figural bird finial, a vine scrolled handle, and applied vine shoulder, raised on a round pedestal-type foot having a die-rolled foliate top and a vine edge, presentation engraving of "B B McCaa / to / L McC Haile" to side. Base impressed with mostly worn marks of "J. CONNING" and "MOBILE" for James Conning of Mobile, AL (active 1841-1871). Total weight: 17.43 ozt. Mid 19th century. 8 1/2" HOA.
Provenance: From a Virginia private collection.
Catalogue Note: This pitcher was given to Ann Louisa McCaa (1825-1905) by her brother Capt. Burwell Boykin McCaa (1822-1863), children of Dr. John McCaa (1793-1859) and Amelia Boykin (1802-1880) of Camden, Kershaw Co., South Carolina. Both siblings moved to Alabama in the 1850s. During the Civil War, Capt. B.B. McCaa formed a cavalry company listed as the 4th Battalion of Mississippi Cavalry, which was later incorporated into the C.S.A. as Co. D, 8th Confederate Cavalry. He was killed in action near Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1863.
Columbus Haile, husband of Louisa, served in the 23rd South Carolina Infantry and was captured at Dinwiddie Court House on April 4th, 1865. After the war, the Haile family moved to Staunton, Virginia around 1870. Columbus and Louisa are buried at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.
Condition
Very good overall condition with minor wear, surface scratches, and nicks, some scattered dents mostly minute to small in size.
