Item Details
Description
Presentation photo album, 15 x 11 in., containing a mix of 292 commercial and original photographs, most approx. 3 x 5 in., b/w. On the cover the title 'Auslandsreise des Kreuzers Emden 1930 -1931' is written in gold text with the emblem of the cruiser Emden beneath. The German cruiser left Wilhelmshaven for its third voyage in 1930 and made several stops in the Caribbean before returning. Then in December she sailed again, travelling to Spain, Colombo, Bangkok, Guam, Durban, Johannesburg and more, not returning until December of 1931. The photos depict the ship itself while navigating the sea, the crew, and locals: in their homes, while they hunt, during prayer at temples, etc. There are also numerous images of striking landscapes including jungles, beaches, mountain ranges, and exotic cities. The photos also highlight wildlife from all over the world such as elephants, camels, bears, snakes, lizards, turtles, fish, and so much more. The first page bears a map showing the path the cruiser followed. The images have been well-preserved in this blue leather album, bound together with grey string. Slight wear at the spine, and two pages are disbound, else very good condition. Lot includes a 'Neptune' award given to passenger, Matrosen Gerbig. The album includes photos of the ceremony that went along with this award including Gerbig dressed as a woman. The 'Emden' did see some action during World War II but by the end was in Berlin for repairs. With only five days remaining before the war officially ended in Europe the crew destroyed the ship with explosives to avoid her capture by the Allies.
