After the war, he served as the 30th governor of Kentucky. 8” x 10” autograph letter signed, four-pages (front and back), Fort Snelling, May 29, 1851, to Col. William Hickey. “…When I addressed you a letter last winter and enclosed you a copy of my application to the Adjutant General of the Army. I had no doubt that your friendship for me would materially assist my application for promotion…your friendship and regard would bring before the President my claims for Brevet Promotion…When I wrote to you last winter I supposed that the subject of Brevet rank would not again to touched upon by the Senate, in reference to promotions for the Mexican War… “
