Description
In large binder, many with typed or handwritten full or partial transcriptions, some with written content narratives or comments, includes a CSA letter, a small 8 letter archive of union soldier C E Kelley, Wisconsin volunteers (fully transcribed), together with union soldier J G Sidery's State of NY, Office of War Prisoners 1865 record of incarceration in a CSA prison describing the harsh conditions and being 'treated like dogs' (fully transcribed), a 9 page handwritten speech purported to be by a Senator Randolph, some handwritten poetry, a GAR photo, post-war War Department correspondence, a CSA cover bearing a Jefferson Davis stamp, 3 newspapers including 11/9/64 & 11/10/64 Philadelphia Inquirer and a NY Herald dated 6/15/63, a southern estate document listing goods & chattel including 10 slaves, a confederate military letter, 20+ unused union patriotic covers, SC Railroad tickets, post war letter signed by Secretary of War William Crowninshield Endicott, etc.
The letters in varying sizes, some in multiple pages, some accompanied by their original transmittal cover, varied subject matter, binder measures 15x12.5in., in generally good condition with expected wear and varying degrees of issues given age and use.
Provenance: Part of a civil war collection of a Sullivan County, NY gentleman 90 years young. The collection spans 50 years and was acquired from shows, dealers and private collections throughout the east coast and midwest.
