Description
Bernard Bee in Uniform, CDV
Carte de visite of Brig. Gen. Bernard E. Bee, measuring 2.25" x 3.5", Charleston, SC, ca. 1861. Standing portrait of Bee in CSA uniform. Bold notation on verso reads "Gen. B Bee killed in 1st Battle of Manassas", accompanied by backstamp from Quinby & Co. of Charleston, SC. Some fading to image with toning throughout, but overall fine condition.
Bernard Elliot Bee (1824-1861) had a long-standing military career, first serving in the Mexican American War as Captain and later as Brigadier General for the Confederacy at the start of the Civil War. He is most well-known however, for giving Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson his nickname, famously stating "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer". Bee was fatally wounded at the First Battle of Bull Run, or Manassas, later sparking debate on the context of the quote.
