Description

Archive of Eight 17th-18th C. English Legal Documents, 1629-1768

A group of eight 17th and 18th-century English indentures, legal decrees, and a marriage license from the reigns of Charles II, William and Mary, George II, and George III. The majority are written upon vellum and date from 1629 to 1768. The group all have flattened folds and varying degrees of toning, soiling, and foxing. Bold and clear text and signatures by related parties. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information. Overall, very good.

Includes the following:
1. 1p, measuring 20" x 13", England, dated November 23, 1747. During the reign of George II. An indenture between Garston Harcourt of Homerton, Middlesex County, and George Thornbororo of the Custom House of London. For marshland called Trinity Marsh in Westham, Essex County.
2. 1p elongated, measuring 12" x 50", Kent, England, dated December 29, 1736. During the reign of George II. A Great Roll, issuing the Sheriff to seize a tenement barn, stable, outhouse, lodge, garden, orchard, and meadow/pasture land in Smeeth, Kent County, belonging to Christopher Worger the elder and Anthony Worger. The land was seized in part due to the two being outlawed in London at the suit of Carmichael Brattle in a plea of a Debt.
3. 1p, measuring 6" x 7.75", Norfolk, England, dated January 2, 1668. During the reign of Charles II. An "Acquitance" in which Richard Turner of Ovington acknowledged the receipt of goods, chattel, and household stuff for debts from the late Anne Jermyn.
4. 1p partially printed, measuring 9.25" x 7.75", Kingsbury, Middlesex County, England, dated July 18, 1768. During the reign of George III. A marriage license for James Lee and Mary Somlens of Willsdon, Middlesex County. The pair were married by Mr. Wright.
5. 1p, measuring 7.75" x 12.25", London, England, dated June 6, 1682. During the reign of Charles II. Written in both Latin and English. An indenture between Richard Ingram and Paul Allestry.
6. 1p, measuring 14.5" x 4", n.p., dated June 3, 1629. Written in Latin, untranslated.
7. 1p, measuring 15.5" x 8", Kent, England, dated November 29, 1689. During the reign of William and Mary. An indenture between Ann Peense and Robert Sampson.
8. 1p, measuring 17.5" x 7", York County, England, dated July 7, 1666. During the reign of Charles II. An indenture between Thomas Witton and William Guiy. With a large wax seal attached to the bottom margin, measuring 1" x 2.
