A LACQUERED-WOOD FIGURE OF A RAKAN
Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century
Carved in sections, assembled, and lacquered, figure, possibly Handaka Sonja shown standing in monastic robes open at the chest and draped over the left shoulder, an alms bowl with flowing water held aloft in his right hand, his eyes inlaid in glass, set on a wood base carved as a rock in crashing waves, the underside with a dedicatory inscription and inscribed Ōei Yorishige, with spurious date Kōchō ninen mizunoe-inu (1262) (2)
