Description
Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Maya Culture, Early Classic to Late Classic Period, ca. 300 to 900 CE. A lovable hand-built effigy pottery vessel, the round body takes on the form of a frog, a symbol of fertility. The frog’s limbs are molded in low relief with a projecting snout set between rounded eyes. Frogs in the Pre-Columbian world were associated with rain, the sustenance that it brings about, and therefore fertility - indeed, the frog glyph symbolized birth dates! This bowl is in near pristine condition with a burnished surface and warm colored slip! Size: 9" Diameter x 4.5" H (22.9 cm x 11.4 cm)
