  • Description:
  • This is a 2-Print lot. The first is a portrait of General Philip Henry Sheridan. It is a Dye Based Photolithograph, and is a restoration print, produced 'after' the original photograph. Rather than being a one-of-a-kind work, it is an open edition, non-commercial sheet-fed mechanical print, analagous to the process used for sheet-fed photogravures. The paper is a 200 GSM, 15 MIL, Matte, Double-Weight Warm Tone, 100% Cotton Rag that is Light Fast and Acid Free. It is enclosed in a polypropolene, archival presentation pocket and reinforced before shipping.

  • BIOGRAPHY'S :: Army General Philip Henry Sheridan (March 6, 1831[1] – August 5, 1888) was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. His career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with General-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant, who transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East. In 1864, he defeated Confederate forces under General Jubal Early in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the economic infrastructure of the Valley, called The Burning by residents, was one of the first uses of scorched-earth tactics in the war.

In 1865, his cavalry pursued Gen. Robert E. Lee and was instrumental in forcing his surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Sheridan fought in later years in the Indian Wars of the Great Plains. Both as a soldier and private citizen, he was instrumental in the development and protection of Yellowstone National Park. In 1883, (after Gen. Grant had been the U.S. President) Sheridan was appointed general-in-chief of the U.S. Army, and in 1888 he was promoted to the rank of General of the Army during the term of President Grover Cleveland.

For the 2nd print, Sheridan is at camp with his colleague Major Gen. Merrit and others. Merrit was second-in-command to Sheridan during the Appomattox Campaign and was one of several commissioners for the surrender at Appomattox Court House. He was brevetted major general in the regular army, in April 1865, for bravery at the Battle of Five Forks and the Appomattox Campaign. In June 1865, Merritt was appointed command of Cavalry Forces of the Military Division of the Southwest, commanded by Sheridan.

Rather than a warmtone print like that of the portrait of Sheridan-this group picture is a coldtone print. Yet it too is a Dye Based Photolithograph, and restored and produced 'after' the original. Also not a one-of-a-kind work, it is an open edition, non-commercial sheet-fed mechanical print, analagous to the process used for sheet-fed photogravures. This print is 215 GSM, 12 MIL Matte, Light Fast and Acid Free, and is also enclosed in a separate polypropolene, archival presentation pocket and reinforced before shipping.
