Description
(Disney, 1939) An extremely rare 35mm story reel (Leica) for "Alice in Wonderland." Dated October 16, 1939, this reel of 35mm nitrate film is titled "The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland," and carries production number 558, story number 1-017, take #1. The credited story man is Jack Cutting. This silent black-and-white reel of film consists of more than 800 images, intended to be viewed one frame at a time, like a film strip, rather than projected. The overwhelming majority of the art is by British Artist David Hall, whose ideas for the design of the film were a unique fusion of the story's original engraved illustrations by Sir John Tenniel, his own brilliant sense of motion picture action and staging, and a playful touch of surrealism. The first frame of the film contains a written forward, which begins: "This is our first Alice In Wonderland story reel, outlining a possible treatment of the book. An incredibly rare and important piece of Disney Studio history.
