Pagine 2 con il Frontespizio, 22. Grande vignetta al Frontespizio incisa da Soubeyran su disegno di Bouchardon, Testatina figurata disegnata e incisa da Rigaud, 13 grandi tavole f.t. disegnate da Blondel, Gabriel, Salley, Servandoni e incise in rame da J.-F. Blondel, delle quali 8 su doppia pagina. Etichetta incisa di Léon Gruel in fine. Lievi difetti alla legatura, internamente buono stato di conservazione.
Bella edizione originale, magnificamente figurata. L’opera descrive le fastose feste, forse le più spettacolari del XVIII secolo, organizzate a Parigi il 29 e 30 agosto 1739, in onore della giovane Delfina che andava sposa al re Filippo di Spagna. Per creare le decorazioni e le strutture furono impiegati un gran numero di architetti e di artigiani, sotto la direzione di Nicolas Servan. Millard: “Le illustrazioni mostrano l’intero spettacolo sulla Senna fra il Pont-Neuf e il Pont Royal, come segue: la struttura per i fuochi d’artificio sul Pont-Neuf e il nuovo terrazzo; l’isola ottagonale per i musicisti al centro della Senna, disegnata da Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni; otto mostri marini che circondano l’isola; un piano di sovrastrutture costruito lungo le rive della Senna per accogliere gli spettatori; e il Palco Reale in forma di un baldacchino attaccato al Louvre, dal quale la coppia reale ha potuto vedere lo spettacolo. Inoltre sono descritti le giostre d’acqua e le luminarie galleggianti.” Le tavole sono incise da Jacques-François Blondel su disegni degli architetti che progettarono gli apparati dei festeggiamenti; particolarmente scenografica la tavola numero 9, su doppia pagina, che mostra i fuochi d’artificio sul fiume. Esemplare di prestigiosa provenienza: faceva parte della collezione del famoso rilegatore Léon Gruel (1840-1923). Attractive contemporary brown morocco binding with the coat of arms of the city of Paris in the center of the covers; on the covers framing a gilt roulette with lily flowers in the corners, spine with raised nervs with gilded lilies, internal roulette and gilt edges, marbled endpapers. Pages 2 with the Title-page, 22. Beautiful first edition, magnificently illustrated. The work describes the sumptuous festivities, likely the most spectacular of the 18th century, were held before the young Dauphine left France to be officially married to Philip in Spain. A large number of architects and craftsmen, led by Jean-Nicolas Servan, designed and built the decorations. Millard: “The illustrations show the entire spectacle on the Seine between the Pont-Neuf and the Pont Royal as follows: the structure for the fireworks on the Pont-Neuf and the new terrace; the octagon 'island' for the musicians designed by Jean-Jerome Servandoni in the centre of the Seine; the eight marine 'monsters' surrounding the island; a plan of the superstructures built along the banks of the Seine to accommodate the viewers; and the Throne Loge in the form of a baldocchino attached to the Louvre, in which the royal couple could view the spectacle. In addition, the water jousting and floating illuminations and the ball given at the Hôtel de Ville for the couple are described”. The plates are engraved by Jacques-François Blondel on drawings by the architects who designed the celebration apparatus; particularly spectacular is the plate number 9, on a double page, which shows the fireworks over the river.The book was part of the collection of the famous bookbinder Léon Gruel (1840-1923).
