Mathew Carey's map, Missouri Territory formerly Louisiana, is one of the seminal maps of the period and the first atlas map to provide the cartographic detail derived from the return of the Lewis & Clark expedition. This is the first state of the map, first issued in his 1814 edition, the same year Lewis & Clark issued their highly influential map of the region from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean, which was also issued by Matthew Carey. It is, without question, the first great map of the American West to appear in a Commercial Atlas published in the United States. The map represents a landmark in American cartographic history. It was one of the first two maps that attempted to explain the great vistas of land secured by Jefferson in the Louisiana Purchase and begin to make sense of the information being provided by other mapmakers of the time. The first state of the map is determined by St. Louis being located east of the Mississippi River. This example was included in Carey’s 1816 edition of his General Atlas. The map has been re-margined at the top and a small repair was done at the upper left of the map just inside the frame.
