a Fine Lower Sepik figure. Lower Sepik/Ramu. Madang province, Papua New Guinea.The figure of characteristic form with pointed coif and concave face, the body elongated with thin arms carved akimbo, hands to the waist, long legs with indication of musculature, on an integral base. Fine dark patina, traces of red pigment. This fine figure is a classical example of Lower Sepik statuary displaying all of the characteristics of the style. Numerous usages have been ascribed to figures of this type from ancestral images to nature spirit-figures. This example appears to have moderate use and age and likely dates to just prior to mid-century.Acquired by Marc Seidler from Rudi Ceaser c. 1982. The Sculpture measures 20.75 inches tall ( 23 inches tall on professional custom display stand which is included)
