Description
An old and worn Highlands Drum; Southern Highlands province, Papua New Guinea. Of elongated hourglass form, with long neck and wide flaring base. The head somewhat rounded for attachment of the tympanum which is intact. Fine old patina from handling and remains of pigment to the lower portion.Highlands drums of this type are characterized by their lack of handles and were used in traditional sing-sings in the highlands. This is a fine old example with considerable age and use.Acquired by Marc Seidler in the Highlands. The drum measures 30.5 inches tall x 7.5 inches wide.
