A fine and rare Mimika (Kamoro) drum. Mikika (Kamoro) people, West Papua (Formerly Irian Jaya).Of simple form, the old drum of waisted hourglass shape with the top quarter carved in typical Mimika patterns. Remains of an old handle. A fine and old example.The Mimika also known as the Kamoro, living the West of the Asmat are not as well-known as their neighbors. Their art is in some ways reminiscent of the Far Western Asmat yet they have a stylistic canon that is quite unique. Mimika culture was severely impacted by the Indonesian forcible relocation of the Amungme and other related highlands groups to their territory because of the Grasberg mine.Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1983. The drum measures 32 inches tall x 6 inches wide.
