Description
A rare and quite large Marind-Anim drum. Marind-Anim people, West Papua (Formerly Irian Jaya). Of hourglass form with square handle, the lower section with typical triangular and spiral designs and red, yellow and white pigmentation. The word “Kaubamoko” incised to the top long after the drum was made. The Marind-Anim were once the most feared headhunters in their region, preying on the Muyu and Mappi peoples as well as often crossing the old Dutch/British border in the colonial era and raiding into British New Guinea in Western Province. Anim related peoples in Western province live north of the Trans-Fly area mostly around Lake Murray. Marind-Anim culture was heavily impacted by Dutch colonial enforcement on the ban on both headhunting and traditional initiation and sexual behavior, which led to an overall collapse in the extremely complex Marind- Anim ritual cycles and culture. Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1983. A Large Drum that measures 44.5 inches tall x 9 inches wide.
