Description
A partly printed adhesive bookplate signed and dated by Norwegian ethnographer/explorer Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002) as "Thor Heyerdahl / 1997" at center. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified and graded NM 7. 1997, n.p. Appears to be unused and near pristine. The actual size of the bookplate is 4" x 3" while the overall size of the slab is 7.125" x 4.25."
Thor Heyerdahl undertook four long-distance voyages in vessels built from natural materials to prove that similar distances could have been spanned by pre-historical and ancient peoples. Of note were the Heyerdahl-led "Kon-Tiki" expedition between Peru and French Polynesia in 1947; the "Ra" and "Ra II" expeditions between Morocco and the Caribbean Sea in 1969-1970; and the "Tigris" expedition from Iraq to Pakistan and through the Red Sea in 1977. Heyerdahl's experimental voyages greatly contributed to 20th century understanding of human migration and cultural diffusion.
