1828 Dated Hand-Wrought Sampler from Albany New York
March 4, 1828-Dated, Early American Hand-Stitched Textile Sampler, Made by "Matilde Van Wie, Aged 8 Years," Albany (New York), Ornately Framed, Very Fine.
Hand-Embroidered on Cotton Linen Sampler, dated "March 4, 1828" as made by "Matilde Van Wie, Aged 8 Years, Albany (New York)." Typically, these Needlework Textile Samplers allowed young women to practice their practical home-craft skills, and have become highly collected for their social history to the past. This Sampler measures 10" x 10" and is nicely mounted and in an ornate deep vintage wood Frame to an overall size of 18" x 21". A modern printed transcription card accompanies this Sampler with all text and designs shown clearly, included mounted below the Sampler within the mellow gold painted frame.
It has a standard Alphabet and Numbers along with a Verse, which reads: "Our very frame is mix'd with sin, His spirit makes our natures clean, Such virtue from his suff'rings flow, As once to cleanse and Pardon too."
The fabric is in good condition, with some minor thread loss and edge fraying at the upper left margin. Some of the stitching was done in light-colored thread which has become more difficult to read as it has faded with age. The verse however, is still very dark and easily legible. Its wood frame has some minor chips and wear yet is in overall good condition for display.
