Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Pet. Schenk exc. Amst C. P.". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Aath, in Henegouw, aan den Dener door de Fransche genoomen, 1667 : doch aan de Spaansche, door de Nimmeesche Vrede, weder gegeven 1678".

Description: View of Ath, a municipality in the Belgian province of Hainaut. Bird's eye view of the fortress. Peter Schenk the Elder was a German engraver and cartographer from Elberfeld, now part of Wuppertal. Around 1684 he moved to Amsterdam and became a pupil of Gerard Valck, specialised in mezzotint; he travelled to Leipzig and Berlin. Until his death in 1718/19 he published numerous maps and pictures.
