Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Chilkat River Region, Tlingit, ca. mid-20th CE. A special hide potlatch apron painted with formline totemic animals, long tassels, and abalone shell dangler ornaments! A long cord is tied to the upper corners for wearing this around the waist like an apron, the top opens into what could function as a large storage pouch that is lined with red cloth, and the verso of the hide is unpainted. Special dance aprons symbolizing clan family affiliation and wealth were worn during special events and potlatches. Comes in a large glass and wood display case. Size of apron: 18" L x 15.5" W (45.7 cm x 39.4 cm); case: 29.5" L x 23.5" W (74.9 cm x 59.7 cm)
