Description
This 1756 copperplate engraving depicts a ‘flying Proa’, a canoe type of the Mariana (Ladrones) Islands, a U.S. Commonwealth located in the western Pacific Ocean. The image is part of English pirate George Anson’s ‘A Voyage Round the World’, published in London and considered one of the greatest first-hand accounts of around-the-world voyages, adventure, and piracy from the age of exploration. Anson’s mission was to attack Spanish territories in western South America and engage and loot Spanish treasure galleons. Despite losing more than two-thirds of his crew and three of his eight ships, Anson’s determined efforts finally saw success when he captured the larger and better-armed Spanish treasure galleon ‘Nuestra Seniora de Cobadonga’ in 1743. This engraving measures 20 3/4” x 11” and is in excellent condition. Authenticity is guaranteed.
