Description
Oil on canvas. Signed (illegibly) lower left. Titled on stretcher bar verso. Dimensions: 16" x 12". Housed in original frame: 22" x 18". The Old Man of the Mountain was an icon for New Hampshire residents and visitors until the rock formation collapsed in 2003. While it remains a prominent image to be seen on New Hampshire state license places many artists chose to stop and paint the image during his visit to the White mountains in the late 1800’s. The White Mountain Museum recently hosted a dedicated exhibit to the subject “An Enduring Presence: The Old Man of the Mountain”. This painting is an excellent example of a late 19th century rendering of the landmark. It is very similar in style to Edward Hill's iconic paintings of the same scene. As the White Mountains was an artist haven during the summer months in New England it appears to have attracted many artists to paint the popular scenes in the New Hampshire area. This painting is from the Thomas and Teresa Russell collection of overlooked American region artists assembled in the 1970’s.
