Description
English. Oil on canvas. A 19th-century painting of a brigantine under sail in calm waters. The sails of the ship are painted in tawny yellow showing their age against a hull painted in jet black. The placid waters are rendered in a darker green-grey with a shadow effect. The brigantine sails calmly against a changing sky painted in tones from pale blue to sunrise yellow. The piece has been reframed with a wide white matte. Titled, "John Preston Carnarvon - Lord Davies Comd. 1860", lower left (and on stretcher). Signed, "F. Hunter", lower right. Sight: 19" x 27.5". Frame: 26.5" x 35" x 1.75". From the June and late David Chambers Collection.

Two old canvas patches to reverse.
