Description
Pre-Columbian La Tolita-Tumaco Seated Musician Figure (ca. 350 BCE to 350 CE). this figure is 4 1/2 inches high or 5 1/2 inches with the stand. The ancient La Tolita-Tumaco culture inhabited areas of the border between modern day Ecuador and Columbia. This ceramic figure is likely a musician with cymbals. It has the traditional La Tolita-Tumaco features: almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, large ears, gently smiling lips, and a tall, rounded headdress or coiffure. Complete figurines from the Tumaco area are rare. And there aren’t many examples of Tumaco ceramic musician figures, one example of a figure playing a wind instrument is in the collection of the University Museum of Antioquia (in Columbia). There is a hole at the top of the figure’s head that functioned as an air vent when it was fired. Professionally mounted on a custom stand. Condition: Some losses on right foot and other areas; repair to the left arm. Provenance: Purchased from the estate of Nancy Lassalle, NYC. She was a founding member of both the NY City Ballet and School of American Ballet boards & an avid collector of Pre-Columbian artifacts.
