Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished redware pottery bowl with large, coiling snakes decorating the exterior walls. Each serpent exhibits a diamond-shaped, viper head as well as a slender body adorned with pecked spots to represent its multitudinous scales. Taller vessels of this form have often been called drums, but were more likely a representation of drums for use in the afterlife. Size: 7.25" W x 4" H (18.4 cm x 10.2 cm)
