Yuli Rafailovich Bershadski (1869-1956) "Horse hunting", ink drawing, 1900
Painted on Russian blanco post-card, it is an original ink drawing by well-known Ukrainian artist from the turn of the 20th century, Yuli Rafailovich Bershadski.
Yuli Rafailovich Bershadski was born in 1869 in Tiraspol, Bessarabia, and died in 1956 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg). In 1886-1893 he studied at the Odessa Art College, where his teachers were K. Kostandi, G. Ladyzhenski and A. Popov. From 1894 Bershadski was a student of St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts (studying under P. Kovalevski, N. Kuznetsov and I. Repin), which he graduated in 1899. From 1892 onwards he regularly participated in exhibitions of the "Society of South Russian Artists", as well as various academic exhibitions. After graduation from the Academy he returned to Odessa and remained there until the beginning of the WWII. In 1941 he moved to Ural and settled in Sverdlovsk (Yekaterinburg).
Apart from his activity as an artist, he taught at various institutions: for instance, Odessa Art School and Sverdlovsk Polytechnic Institute.
Works of Yuli Rafailovich Bershadski are on view in museums of Odessa, Krasnodar, Kharkov, Yekaterinburg, etc.

Provenance: acquired in March 2011 at Ebay auction as one of several drawings, as well as watercolor and oil studies - all similarly painted on Russian blanco post-cards and produced by Odessa artists of the turn of 20th century. The Ebay-seller was a lady living currently in Freiberg, Saxony (Germany), who inherited the album previously owned by Mme Erato Mavrogordato. Formerly an Odessa citizen, the latter and her husband (well-known archaeologist Peter (Pierre) Mavrogordato) emigrated in 1903 from Odessa to Germany.
