Description
Robert H. v. Doblhoff (1880-1960), "In shtetl Buczac, West Ukraine", drawing, 1915
A winter street scene in Buczac, Galicia (West Ukraine) during WWI. Buczac (now Butschatsch / Buchach) was a well-known Shtetl near Ternopol.
Baron Robert Heinrich von Doblhoff-Dier (1880 Vienna - 1960 ibid.) studied painting with Sigmund L Allemand and August Eisenmenger at the Academy of Fine Arts, served as a dragoon in the military in 1900/1901 and expanded his skills in 1903 at the "Academie Julian" in Paris and with Adolf Hoelzl in Dachau. He then lived as "Associe des Champs de Mars" in Paris, stayed in the USA and undertook a world tour that took him to China and Japan. During the First World War he first served at the front, then he was employed as a painter in the war press headquarters. From 1918 he lived alternately in Vienna and the USA, from 1932 he returned to Vienna permanently.
Doblhoff was president and honorary member of the "Association of Danube Artists", which was dissolved in 1938. He mainly made portraits, e.g. by Franklin D. Roosevelt (1907; during his trip to the USA), Emperor Franz Josef (1909) and Ignaz Seipel (1923) as well as the decorative compositions "Evoe" (1909) and "Apollo and the Muses" (1912).
This work, along with many other drawings, watercolors and oil paintings we possess, was painted by the artist during the First World War, while he was serving in the Austrian army as officer and military painter.
