Description
This is a bonus attic sale lot with two works. Portraits Peter Darlington & Mrs. Darlington, 1948-1950. Oil on canvas. "Mrs Darlington" signed & dated 'Nov.1948', lower left. Mr. Dralington signed verso & identified. Dimensions: (Peter Darlington): 30" x 26"; framed: 36" x 32". Dimensions: (Mrs. Darlington): 33" x 26"; framed: 34" x 27". These two visages remind me of my youthful days playing the board "Clue"…is it Mrs Darlington who murdered the Colonel in the study? While seemingly charactures today, these accomplished portraits by Walter Feldman give insight into the demand for artists in the 1950’s. The necessity of mastering portraiture to achieve recognition as a professional, the opportunity to earn money through commissions and the singular creative individuality of the artist to communicate insights about the sitter. Obviously, Sargent was a master of this portraiture stuff. But what of Walter Feldman? In these two works we see an artist who clearly mastered representation as an artist and what we would expect of an artist of Yale caliber. Portraiture dates back to the Egyptians and its role in society transitions for every generation. These two accomplished portraits document for Feldman his mastery of realism and prepare him to embrace his transition to modernism in the future years as the next step in artistic development
