Item Details
Description
Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. An extremely rare faience cabochon of hemispherical form covered in turquoise-hued glaze, the center bearing a recumbent jackal in dark-blue pigment. The right-facing canine rests with forelegs extended and its lower back arched upwards, with a crescent-shaped lappet draped below the pointed ear. Depictions of recumbents jackals were likely zoomorphic references to Anubis, the jackal-headed god of the dead and the process of embalming. This artifact is perhaps a votive offering meant to accompany the dead to the afterlife, with Anubis enacting his role as a psychopomp. Size: 0.71" L x 0.72" W x 0.28" H (1.8 cm x 1.8 cm x 0.7 cm)

Exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from 1986 to 1991; in the University of Arizona Museum of Art, October 1993 to December 1993; and in the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA), California State University, San Bernardino from 1996 to 2023, reference number EL01.282.1996.

Published in Dr. Gerry D. Scott III. "Temple, Tomb and Dwelling: Egyptian Antiquities from the Harer Family Trust Collection." University of California Press, 1992, p. 187, fig. 137.
