Description
A carved wooden male effigy of Dyougou Serou, and is shown hiding his face in his hands in shame for his misdeed. It has also been described as a Mourning figure. This sculpture appears to have been used as a shrine object and part of ancestor worship ritual, encrusted with blood offerings, this may reference part of the Dogon creation myth. This sculpture measures 9.75 inches tall or 11.5 inches tall on professional custom display stand, the stand measures 4 x 4 inches.. Well weathered and worn, suggesting many years as a shrine object. Dogon peoples, Mali, West Africa. Provenance: A private Washington DC collection.
