America, 19th century. A pair of letters penned by Rufus King Jr. to Cincinnati judge, William Worthington dating to 1898.
The father of Rufus King Jr (1838-1900), Rufus King (1814-1876), was known as the Union Army brigadier general who assembled the Iron Brigade at the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. He was also know for being vital in the capture of accused Lincoln assassination plotter John Surratt. Jr's grandfather, Rufus King (1755-1827) was a founding father who signed the United States Constitution in 1787.
Rufus King Jr served in the Civil War within Company F, 7th New York Militia. By the end of the war, King was brevetted major for conduct during the war and awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at White Oak Swamp by the United States Army.

William Worthington (1847-1922) was Judge of the Superior Court of Cincinnati from 1882-1884. He was a Director and general counsel for the Little Miami Railroad Company and the Cincinnati Art Museum. He was also associated with the Cincinnati Music Hall Association, Spring Grove Cemetery, the Shillito Realty Company, and the University of Cincinnati.
