Description
This is an original from-life period photograph of J.E.B. Stuart, C.S.A. General circa 1860?s during the American Civil War by Mathew B. Brady. James Ewell Brown ?Jeb? Stuart (1833-1864) was a celebrated Confederate cavalry commander of General Robert E. Lee?s Army of Northern Virginia. This is a rare albumen carte de visite photograph, marked on the front, ?Gen. J.E.B. Stuart? and also ?Brady New York.? The back is marked, ?Brady?s National Photographic Portrait Galleries Broadway & Tenth Street. New York & No. 352 Pennsylvania Av. Washington D.C.? There is only one other example of this rare image, found in the American Civil War Museum, that image has the same size and markings by Brady. The photograph exhibits General Jeb Stuart standing in full Confederate Civil War regalia including: wearing full beard, moustache, hat with plume, double-breasted jacket, with braiding at sleeve, gauntlets, trousers, riding boots, holding binoculars in right hand, and sword hilt in left. Stuart served under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. He fought at the Peninsula Campaign, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg and was mortally wounded May 1864 at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, Virginia. The American Civil War Museum noted this photograph as being just before the Battle of Yellow Tavern. The image is by the Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries said to be in operation from circa 1860-1875 and published by E. & H.T. Anthony (1862-1902). The photographer, Matthew B. Brady (1822-1896) was the most noted photographer from the Civil War and best-known American Photographer of the nineteenth century, he was know as ?Mr. Lincoln?s cameraman and his images are some of the most important from the era. This albumen carte viste photograph is on heavy stock which is well kept good clean edges, clear image, the back has a small piece of old tape and remnants of another piece that was removed. Good condition. This is the only known example of this image by Brady that has come onto the public market. Measures by itself 4? by 2 3/8?. U6.
