Item Details
Description
Native American, North America, Southwestern Arizona, ca. 900 to 1400 CE. A bracelet carved from a single clam shell into a continuous bangle with string cut lines to delineate a bird head or similar shape on one side. The Hohokam culture evolved in the deserts of southern Arizona, extending southward into extreme northern Mexico and northward as far as Flagstaff Arizona. They often traded with other southern and coastal tribes to acquire large pieces of shell since the type of mollusk commonly used in this type of jewelry, Glycymeris gigantea, is only found along the Pacific coast of Baja and Mexico. Size: 3.5" Diameter x 1" W (8.9 cm x 2.5 cm)
