Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwest, Central eastern Arizona, Anasazi / Ancestral Puebloan, Greater Mogollon, Greater Salado, Upper Gila (Highland Salado), Roosevelt Red (Salado Polychrome Ware, Tonto Polychrome, ca. 1350 to 1450 CE. An ornate pottery olla exemplifying Tonto Polychrome decoration with the meticulously painted design of abstract fox head figures along the bulbous body and geometric motifs encompassing the neck. The complex ornamentation consists of spiral, hatch, steppe, and linear motifs with each fox head formed from a triangle with broad pointed ears, square eyes, and a central stripe travelling down the tapered snout, petite dashes line the periphery perhaps representing fur. The rotund vessel was formed via the coil-and-scrape technique, traditional of the Ancestral Puebloan people. A wonderful example of Anasazi pottery and zoomorphic iconography! Size: 13.7" Diameter x 10.25" H (34.8 cm x 26 cm)

The Salado (Spanish for "salty") peoples migrated to the Salt River in Southeastern Arizona. They resided in the center of three major cultures of the Southwest of the time period: Anasazi to the North, Mogollon to the East and South, and the Hohokam to the West and Southwest. There are three recognized styles of Salado polychrome pottery: Pinta, Gila, and Tonto. All were done in red, white, and black polychrome. Tonto Polychrome probably developed out of earlier Pinto and Gila Polychromes. Red and white slips are applied to the exteriors of bowls, but unlike Gila Polychrome, the interiors are undecorated but sometimes smudged.

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, purchased September 20, 2015; ex-Manu Antique Gallery, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA
