Latin America, Mexico, Mata Ortiz, ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A pair of handmade pottery vessels by contemporary Mata Ortiz artists. The red pot with the gentle ridges spiraling around from the base to shoulder is signed by Armando Silveira Jr. The marbled vessel has a faint almost indiscernible signature etched into the base for award winning artist Pilo Mora, and a number "02," possibly for the year 2002. The marbleized surface is then overpainted with precise black spiraling motifs. Pilo Mora, also known as Porfirio Mora Villalba (b. 1961), is a master Mata Ortiz potter with museum exhibited pieces in the Art Museum in the University of New Mexico and San Diego Museum of Man. Mora is also mentioned in "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz" By Susan Lowell with photographs as part of a pottery making demonstration on pages 190-191. The Pilo Mora signature is extremely faint due to marbling and overpainting, but is just slightly offcenter on the base, vessel is intact and excellent. Silverira pot has a few minor surface scuffs, otherwise intact and great condition.
