A document appointing Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. as "the Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations with the rank and status of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and the Representative of the United States of America in the Security Council of the United Nations, and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfil the duties of those Offices according to law, and to have and to hold the said Offices, with all the powers, privileges, and emoluments thereunto of right appertaining unto him?during the pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being?"

Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. (1902-1985) was an American diplomat and politician who represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate. He managed Eisenhower's successful campaign for the Republican presidential nomination at the 1952 Republican National Convention. After losing his own re-election campaign to then-Congressman John F. Kennedy, Lodge was named as ambassador to the United Nations in 1953 and became a member of Eisenhower's Cabinet. Vice President Nixon would later chose Lodge as his running mate in the 1960 presidential election. After losing once again to the now-President Kennedy, Lodge was appointed Ambassador to South Vietnam in 1963. He would go on to represent the United States in various countries under Presidents Johnson, Nixon, and Ford, and led the U.S. delegation that signed the Paris Peace Accords with North Vietnam, leading to the end of the Vietnam War.
