Description
Eisenhower Appoints Raymond Hare Ambassador During Suez Canal Crisis
1p partially printed, measuring 21" x 19", Washington, D.C., dated January 29, 1957. Signed "Dwight D Eisenhower" as President and countersigned by "John Foster Dulles" as Secretary of State. A document appointing Raymond A. Hare as Ambassador to Egypt. With a large white paper seal at the lower left. Flattened folds, with minor areas of ink transference. Boldly signed.
Raymond Hare was appointed during the Suez Canal crisis, when Israeli armed forces invaded Egypt near the Suez Canal on October 29, 1956. The invasion was prompted by Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalizing the foreign-owned Suez Canal Company in July 1956. The Israelis were soon joined by French and British forces, which nearly drew the Soviet Union into the conflict. Hare was able to negotiate a cease-fire between Egypt and Israel, and after pressure from the U.S., Soviet Union, and United Nations, the three invaders finally withdrew.
