James Madison Signed 1809 Ships Passport
PPDS
A ship's passport signed by 4th U.S. President James Madison, New York, dated June 8, 1809. 1p of vellum, measuring 10.5" x 15.25", The ship's passport is signed "James Madison" at lower right and countersigned by U.S. Secretary of State Robert Smith as "R. Smith". Bearing an embossed wafer seal at lower left corner and naval shipping motifs to the upper margin. Expected wear, including flattened folds and minor warping, light toning, and intermittent mounting residue present to edges. Very good overall with bold signature.
The partly printed document, No. 220, reads in part: "Suffer the Brig Lion of Portland John Alden master or commander of the burthen of Four hundred two ?/95 tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with eight men To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandize without any hinderance (sic) or molestation?".
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
