John M. Schofield Signed Endorsement for Consul of Mexico
Autograph Endorsement

An endorsement for Colonel James Marr of El Paso, Texas applying to the position of Consul to Mexico, signed by Major General John Schofield (1831-1906) as "J. M. Schofield". 1p (front and back), measuring 8" x 10.5", Headquarters of the Army, Washington, D.C., dated June 3, 1889. To the left of Schofield's signature is an additional endorsement from General John Irvin Gregg (1826-1892), with a related letter on verso addressed to General Schofield soliciting his endorsement, reading in part: "Col. Marr having served under you during the war of the rebellion would be gratified to have your influence to secure for him this appointment." The letter's second page cannot be viewed, having been attached at front. Heavy to moderate wear, with tearing near edges and corners leading to slight paper loss, darkened soiling, and age toning throughout; restorative archival tape present along top edge, attaching the two documents. Good to fair overall with intact signature.

John M. Schofield was an American soldier who held major commands during the American Civil War. He was later appointed U.S. Secretary of War under President Andrew Johnson, and served as Commanding General of the United States Army between the years of 1888-1895. During his time as Commanding General, he notably supported the adoption of lineal promotions and initiated performance reviews which limited political patronage considerations from the promotion process.
