Description
Inscribed "JOHANN / REGS ESQR. / II PA Rgt. / 1775" (identified with John Rex, 1741-1802, resident of Germantown) further engraved with a view of Philadelphia as seen from the river, with a ship and windmill, and a British royal coat of arms; cow horn with carved mouth, the butt with domed wooden cap secured with brads, centering a rose-head nail for suspension, 10 1/2 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased in 1999, presumably from W. Guthman. With copies of relevant documents and research.
Condition
Considerable damage from horn worms, affecting the date but otherwise leaving the design clear. Other wear consistent with age and use
