Item Details
Description
Inscribed "COP / IAMES WATHERBE" and dated July, 1758 (identified with James Weatherby, born c.1734, a Massachusetts militiaman from Dedham) further labeled "HUDSONS X RIVER," with plan of a fort labeled "FE" (Fort Edward, on the Hudson River, a few miles from south end of Lake George) nearly disguised among stylized plants, and with other plants engraved all around; cow horn with carved wooden butt cap bearing incised initials "IW,", secured with brads, later cut short at the spout end and fitted with a turned wooden stopper, 9 1/4 in. L. overall. Together with a group of artifacts including an order for transport of a wagon, probably Revolutionary period, two fragments of newspapers, white glass trade beads, three buttons, and other items.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from William Guthman, October, 1985. Accompanied by copies of documents and research.
