Description
Three archaic Highlands stone vessels from Mt. Hagen, Western Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. The three objects made of various stone, two apparently mortars one made from a dark red volcanic material, the other made from a dense white stone, the third an unusual ritual object perhaps in the form of a calabash with incising on the surface and a cavity at the top.Ancient stone object are found in various parts of New Guinea, and particularly in the Highlands. Largely thanks to the work of Susan Bulmer, These objects became known to the wider general public as having an archaic origin in many cases dating back hundreds and in some cases thousands of years. Ancient mortars when found in these regions tend to be used my contemporary peoples for grinding pigments or medicines, and are prized as magical items. The unusually shaped object may have been small medicine mortar or a sacred stone of unknown usage.Acquired by Marc Seidler in the Highlands, 1980's. The Tallest is 6 inches tall, the other two are 4 inches tall.
