Item Details
Description
Three Prattware jugs, circa 1800
Moulded and picked out in Pratt colours, two with profile portraits of 'ADMIREL DUNCAN [sic], the reverse of the larger example with figures gathering the harvest, 19.5cm high, the smaller with a portrait of 'CAPTAIN TROLOP [sic] to the reverse, 13.8cm high, the third example with half-length portraits both presumed to be Admiral John Jervis, 'LORD JARVIS [sic]' moulded to one side of the jug in a banner below the shoulder, 15.7cm high (3)
Footnotes:
See the footnote to lot 120 in this sale for an example similar to the first and second-mentioned jugs, attributed to one of the Scottish East Coast potteries. Naïve misspellings appear regularly in commemorative pottery of this type.
Condition
The largest jug: the handle has been broken and restored in two places, one at the lower terminal and the second just above this. A short restored crack runs horizontally from the lower handle terminal around the jug to meet the female figure on the reverse side to the photo and meets a longer restored vertical crack which is visible to the interior of the jug and stops approximately half way up the body of the jug. Otherwise, the jug is in good condition, save for typical crazing to the glaze, some of which has let in a little light brown stain.

The medium-sized jug (right in photo): overall in good condition, save for a shallow chip to the outside edge of the spout, approximately 0.8cm x 0.4cm in size. There is some wear and minor glaze loss to the sharp edges of the rim, handle and high points of the moulding but the jug otherwise remains well and is free from restoration.

The smallest jug (left in photo): there is a short vertical hairline crack to one side of the spout approximately 1.2cm long, which is associated with a similarly short horizontal hairline along the rim itself, both of which have picked up some stain. Otherwise, the jug is in good condition, save for a few very tiny and insignificant points of glaze loss at the tip of the spout. There is some typical minor crazing which has also picked up a little light brown stain in places. The jug is free from any restoration.
