Description

Rare first edition, first state of printing of North America from Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Jr’s very first atlas. This atlas was produced for only a month or two before the plates were altered and new images replaced the rare, original ones. The rare first-state maps are easy to identify by noting the plate number inside the frame close to the title. All subsequent images of this map were published with the plate number converted to a page number and placed outside the frame. Given the small number of atlases likely printed in the original small window of time, and the passage of 163 years, there are precious few of these first-state maps likely in existence. Excellent original color and nice ink impression. Few light and insignificant spots in margin. 10.5 x 13.375
