Description

Authentic first edition/first printing of Samuel A. Mitchell Jr’s “Plan of Boston” with plate number inside the upper right frame, indicating the rare first state of this map. The publishing history of Mitchell Jr’s initial project is quite informative. Apparently, he published the first edition for only a couple of months before altering the plates by removing the plate numbers from within the map frames and placing them outside the frames to basically make them page numbers. Because of the brief publishing duration and passage of 163 years, first printings of his first atlas are now quite rare, as are the maps contained therein. As with other maps from this first state, the printing is much more pronounced, with deeper shades and finer images. Boston's role as a transportation center during the mid-19th century is evident on this general reference atlas map. Wharves lining the eastern shore of the peninsula provide evidence of the city's long-time shipping industry. Meanwhile, there were eight train stations located within the city proper, indicating the growing importance of rail traffic to the city's growth. In addition, the regional inset shows these rail lines radiating out to the neighboring suburbs and industrial towns in eastern Massachusetts. Spot at bottom margin.
