Ward/Carozzi, Geol. emerging 1284. - Unser Exemplar mit der oft fehlenden eindrucksvollen doppelseitigen Ansicht eines Steinbruchs, aber ohne die gestochenen Titel der ersten drei Bände, die aufgrund der Publikationsgeschichte manchmal zusammen mit den Tafeln zu finden sind, obwohl es in keinem der vier Bände Hinweise auf gestochene Titelblätter gibt. Die Tafeln sind bekannt dafür, dass sie in mehreren Farben gedruckt und dann von Hand nachbearbeitet wurden. - Das schönste und umfassendste Werk über Fossilien im Jahrhundert der Aufklärung. Die auf den Tafeln abgebildeten Fossilien zumeist mit Herkunftsnachweis über die jeweiligen Sammlungen und Naturalienkabinett, aus denen die Objekte stammen (u.a. genannt Gessner, Schmidel, Walch, Andreae und d'Anone). In vorliegendem Exemplar wurde Teil 1 zweimal eingebunden: zunächst in der erweiterten Ausgabe von 1777 und in der ersten Ausgabe von 1768. - Teils etwas gegilbt und minimal fleckig, vereinzelt schwache, kleine Wasserflecken im Außensteg von Band II/2 und im Kopfsteg von Bd. As DSB notes, Knorr was one of the protogeologists of the eighteenth century who is intermediate between the collectors of cabinets of natural history and those who first made use of fossils for the identification and mapping of stratigraphic succession. - "... the extraordinary quality of the plates ...led to the expansion of the work by Walch, as well as to French and Dutch editions. It is scarcely an exaggeration to say that the beauty of some of Knorr's illustrations exceeds that of their models and that in all cases the artist's eye has transformed neutral, natural objects into permanent, formal aspects of humanism.
