Item Details
Description

This Persian camel adorned with silver and gold damascene is a beautiful representation of the artistic boom of the Qajar dynasty during the 19th century. Modeled standing foursquare with a round body, short tail, single hump, short ears, and long snout with facial features, bring a natural look to this piece. An intricate floral motif decorates the body, neck, and head of the camel. The back is adorned with a round, tasseled blanket, as would have been placed for a rider to sit upon. It was not until the 19th century that steel was widely used in the creation of zoomorphic statues. These statues were created as embellishments during important ceremonies and processions, each animal taking on a different significance, in the minds and eyes of Shi'a believers; the camel becoming a symbol of the Prophet.

Qajar Dynasty - CA. 19th Century

H: 10 3/4 in., (27.5 cm.)

Condition
The figure is in very fine condition with expected signs of wear and age. The damascene is well-preserved. No dents or deep scratches.
