Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Mayan culture, ca. 600-900 CE. The Mayans created ceramics in a variety of styles and finishes. While polychrome pieces are attractive for their incorporation of contrasts in palette, monochrome redware pieces are brilliant as well. This ensemble includes a near-miniature figurative vessel featuring a cross-legged figure with one hand held to chin or mouth. The visage is animated with coffee-bean shaped eyes and full mouth and adorned with a large headdress that doubles as the spout. The exterior is slipped in a vibrant red favored by Pre-Columbian artisans. In addition, this group includes four bowls likely used in feasts by the Mayans. Figural vessel 4"T; Largest bowl 2 1/2"H x 5 1/4"D
