1798 Kentucky Pioneer Document signed by George Berry, 1p, approx. 6-3/4 x 4". Hardin County [Elizabethtown], Kentucky, court document dated 1798, concerns George Helm, signed by Justice of the Peace George Berry.Thomas Lincoln [Abraham Lincoln's father] helped build a mill in Elizabethtown in 1797 for Samuel Haycraft Sr., near the present day Race Street. It is said that thias was the first mill in the settlement, later it was sold to George Berry who changed it to a sawmill, "being frequently out of order, due to mischievous youth." In 1796 Thomas Lincoln enlisted to fight the Indians, and the following year is found hard at work building a mill dam at Elizabethtown. The original ledger in which his account of work at this time was entered is in the library of the Lincoln National Research Foundation. He received over $150 for the work he did for Haycraft building the mill.
